KNX Protocol Explained: Integration & Programming for Sydney Projects
KNX is an open, manufacturer-independent standard for building automation, widely used internationally and increasingly specified on architect-led residential and commercial projects in Sydney. Unlike proprietary systems, KNX devices from different manufacturers can sit on the same bus and be programmed through a single tool (ETS), which makes it attractive for large or multi-trade projects.
What KNX handles well
KNX is commonly used for lighting, blinds and shading, HVAC control, and integration with security and access systems, communicating over a dedicated twisted-pair bus (or IP in newer installations). Its strength is flexibility: because it's an open standard, a KNX installation isn't locked to one manufacturer's roadmap.
Integrating KNX with C-Bus and Dynalite
Many of our commercial projects combine systems — for example, a KNX backbone for HVAC and blinds alongside C-Bus or Dynalite for lighting scenes, bridged through a KNX-to-C-Bus or KNX-to-DALI gateway. We handle the gateway configuration, address mapping and scene synchronisation so building managers get one consistent control experience regardless of which protocol sits behind each subsystem.
Programming and commissioning
KNX programming is done in ETS (Engineering Tool Software), where group addresses, scenes and logic are configured against the physical topology of the installation. We commission KNX installations end-to-end — device configuration, gateway integration, and handover documentation for the building owner or facility manager.
