Invisible Automation: Heritage Retrofitting in Sydney

Heritage-listed and character homes across Sydney's older suburbs present a specific challenge for lighting and automation retrofits: the wiring, switches and control points need to disappear into the existing fabric of the building rather than announcing themselves. "Invisible automation" is our approach to retrofitting C-Bus and Dynalite control into heritage properties without visible conduit, oversized keypads or intrusive wall plates.

How we approach a heritage retrofit

Most heritage retrofits start with a site survey to map existing circuits and identify non-invasive cable paths — through roof spaces, under-floor cavities and existing conduit runs — before any wall is opened. Where new cabling can't be hidden in existing paths, we work with the builder or heritage consultant to agree on approved locations that satisfy heritage overlay conditions.

Matching hardware to the period

Keypads, dimmers and sensors are selected for minimal visual footprint, with trims and finishes chosen to match existing joinery and hardware where the heritage overlay requires it. Programming is configured so that legacy switch positions continue to behave the way owners expect, while adding scene control, scheduling and remote access behind the scenes.

Suburbs we work in

We regularly retrofit heritage homes and terraces across the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, North Shore and the Sutherland Shire. If you're renovating a heritage property and want lighting control that respects the building's character, get in touch for a site assessment.
