A

AFSS

Annual Fire Safety Statement. A certificate NSW building owners must submit to council each year confirming all fire safety measures β€” including emergency lighting β€” remain compliant with the Building Code of Australia. If your emergency lighting fails AFSS testing, George can repair or replace the non-compliant fittings.

Area (C-Bus)

A C-Bus network subdivision. Each area can contain up to 255 units. Large buildings often divide by floor or wing. Correct area assignment is essential for scene recall and scheduling to work as intended.

B

BACnet

Building Automation and Control network. An open-protocol standard used by HVAC, access control, and lighting systems to communicate with a central BMS. C-Bus and DALI gateways can translate commands into BACnet for integration.

BMS

Building Management System. The master control platform in commercial buildings that monitors and manages HVAC, lighting, lifts, and fire systems. C-Bus, Dynalite, and DALI all offer integration paths into a BMS via gateways or open protocols.

Bus Load / Network Burden

The total electrical load placed on a C-Bus or Dynalite data cable by all connected units. Exceeding the rated burden causes random drop-outs, ghost triggers, and units going offline. The most under-diagnosed cause of intermittent faults in older systems β€” not the keypads or dimmers.

C

C-Bus

Schneider Electric's (formerly Clipsal) smart wiring system for residential and commercial buildings. Uses a twisted-pair data cable to connect light switches, dimmers, relays, sensors, and gateways. Each unit has a unique address and is programmed using C-Bus Toolkit software.

C-Bus Toolkit

The official Schneider Electric software used to program, configure, and diagnose C-Bus installations. Connects to the network via a PCI or CNI interface. If your Toolkit can't connect, the PCI, network burden, or address conflict is usually the culprit.

Channel

The smallest addressable unit in a C-Bus or Dynalite system β€” typically one dimmer or relay output controlling one lighting circuit. A single unit (e.g. a 4-channel dimmer) contains four channels.

Clipsal

The original brand name under which C-Bus was developed in Australia. Clipsal was acquired by Schneider Electric. The C-Bus product range is now sold under both Clipsal and Schneider Electric branding.

CNI

C-Bus Network Interface. A device that connects a C-Bus network to an IP (Ethernet) network, allowing remote programming and monitoring. Used in large commercial installations where physical PCI access is impractical.

D

DALI

Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. An international standard (IEC 62386) for controlling lighting systems over a two-wire bus. Each DALI device (ballast, driver, sensor) has a unique address 0–63 on a single line. Maximum 64 devices per DALI line, 10 groups, 16 scenes.

DALI-2

The second generation of the DALI standard (post-2014). Adds mandatory interoperability certification, support for input devices (sensors, push buttons), and device-type commands. DALI-2 devices must be certified by the DiiA (Digital Illumination Interface Alliance). Not all DALI devices are DALI-2 compliant.

DALI Line Controller

The master device on a DALI bus that sends commands and receives status feedback. A failed line controller is the most common reason an entire floor or zone stops responding. Often confused with a power supply failure.

DIN Rail

A standardised metal rail mounted inside electrical switchboards. C-Bus and Dynalite DIN-rail units (dimmers, relays, logic controllers) are installed here. Access requires a licensed electrician.

DLT

Dynalite Load Timer. A Dynalite controller module that manages time-based scenes and schedules. Requires correct clock synchronisation β€” common failure point after power outages.

DMX

DMX512. A digital communications protocol originally developed for theatrical lighting control. Used in entertainment, hospitality, and architectural lighting. Can integrate with C-Bus or Dynalite via gateway interfaces.

DyNet

Dynalite's proprietary communication protocol, operating over RS-485. DyNet defines how Dynalite controllers, keypads, and gateways communicate. DyNet v1 and DyNet v2 have different message structures β€” mixing them without a gateway causes communication failures.

Dynalite

Philips Lighting's (now Signify) intelligent building lighting control system. Used extensively in commercial buildings, hotels, and high-end residential. Programmed via Philips Designer software. Based in Australia β€” Australian buildings have some of the highest concentrations of Dynalite installations in the world.

E

Emergency Lighting

Lighting that activates automatically on mains power failure to illuminate exit paths. Must comply with AS 2293 in Australian buildings. Two types: maintained (always on, dims in normal mode) and non-maintained (only on during emergencies). Must be tested and logged β€” required for AFSS compliance.

G

Gateway

A device that translates between two different protocols. Examples: C-Bus to DALI gateway, Dynalite to BACnet gateway, C-Bus to KNX gateway. Gateways are critical integration points β€” a failed or misconfigured gateway breaks all cross-system commands.

Ghost Trigger / Phantom Trigger

When a C-Bus or Dynalite unit sends a command with no physical input β€” lights turn on or off without anyone pressing a button. Usually caused by excessive bus load, a failing power supply, or a faulty input unit. Not a programming issue.

Group (DALI)

Up to 16 groups can be defined on a single DALI line, each containing any combination of the 64 devices. Groups are the primary way to control multiple luminaires together β€” e.g. 'open plan desks' or 'perimeter' as separate groups.

K

KNX

An open-standard building automation protocol for lighting, heating, and security. Widely used in Europe and growing in Australia for premium commercial projects. C-Bus installations can integrate with KNX via certified gateways.

L

Lux

The SI unit of illuminance β€” how much light falls on a surface. Building codes (NCC, AS 1680) specify minimum lux levels for different spaces. Automated lighting control can maintain target lux levels using daylight sensors and dimming.

N

NABERS

National Australian Built Environment Rating System. Rates commercial buildings on energy efficiency. Automated lighting control with occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting directly improves a building's NABERS energy rating.

NCC

National Construction Code. Australia's mandatory code governing the design, construction, and performance of buildings. Part J (energy efficiency) and Section E (fire safety) directly affect lighting control system requirements.

Network Address / Unit Address

The unique identifier assigned to each C-Bus or Dynalite unit on the network. Duplicate addresses cause unpredictable behaviour β€” two units responding to the same command or neither responding. Always verify addresses during commissioning or fault-finding.

O

Occupancy Sensor

A device that detects human presence (PIR, microwave, or dual-technology). Integrated with C-Bus or DALI to switch lights on when occupied and off after a timeout. Incorrectly calibrated time-out and sensitivity settings are the most common commissioning complaint.

P

PCI

C-Bus PC Interface. A DIN-rail unit that connects a laptop running C-Bus Toolkit to the C-Bus network via USB. The PCI blinks red when the network has excessive burden or address conflicts β€” not a failed PCI.

Philips Designer

The software application used to program Dynalite systems (now branded Signify Designer). Requires a connection to the Dynalite network controller. Programming is lost if a controller is replaced without backing up the configuration.

R

RAPIX

A Signify protocol layer that sits above DyNet, enabling Dynalite systems to communicate over standard IP networks without requiring dedicated RS-485 cabling. Common in modern commercial Dynalite retrofits. Requires RAPIX gateways and correctly configured IP addressing.

RS-485

A serial communication standard used by Dynalite (DyNet), some DALI implementations, and other building automation protocols. Sensitive to cable length, termination resistors, and stub lengths β€” common causes of intermittent faults in large installations.

S

Scene

A pre-programmed combination of light levels stored as a single command. Pressing 'Scene 3' might set the meeting room to 60%, turn off the breakout lights, and dim the corridor to 20% β€” all from one button press. Scenes are programmed in C-Bus Toolkit or Philips Designer.

Schneider Electric

The multinational corporation that owns the Clipsal and C-Bus brands. Since acquiring Clipsal, Schneider Electric has continued developing the C-Bus platform. Accredited C-Bus programmers must complete Schneider Electric's certification program.

Signify

The company formed when Philips spun off its lighting division in 2016. Signify owns the Dynalite brand and RAPIX protocol. The Sydney Automation Co. team is trained on both Dynalite and RAPIX platforms.

Smart Dimmer

A C-Bus or Dynalite DIN-rail dimmer module that receives commands over the data bus rather than a conventional switch. Can control incandescent, halogen, LED (trailing/leading edge), or fluorescent loads depending on the model. Using the wrong dimmer type for LED loads causes flickering.

T

Trailing Edge Dimmer

A dimmer that cuts power at the trailing (falling) edge of the AC waveform. Preferred for LED and electronic transformer loads as it generates less interference. C-Bus 5000 series trailing edge dimmers are widely installed in Sydney's premium residential market.

Z

Zone (Dynalite)

Dynalite's equivalent of a C-Bus channel β€” a single addressable load. A Dynalite DDBC800 controller can manage up to 8 zones. Zone addressing must be unique within each DyNet area.
